Exposure: all the bridges considered in the analyses have a continuous deck over three cantilever piers. The four bays are all 50m long, for a total length of the bridges equal to 200m. The twenty configurations have been obtained by combination of two 'basic' deck sections and two 'basic' pier sections. The two deck sections are both pre-stressed concrete box girders.$Paragraph$FFFFF = soil type underneath the abutments is firm soil, soil type underneath the pier 1, pier 2 and pier 3 is firm soil. Uniform, firm-type soil all along the bridge profile;$Paragraph$FMMMF = soil type underneath the abutments is firm soil, soil type underneath the pier 1, pier 2 and pier 3 is medium soil;$Paragraph$FFMFF = soil type underneath the abutments is firm soil, soil type underneath the pier 1 and pier 3 is firm soil, while pier 2 is medium soil;$Paragraph$FMFMF = soil type underneath the abutments is firm soil, soil type underneath the pier 1 and pier 3 is medium soil, while pier 2 is firm soil. This is the most inhomogeneous profile among the cases considered, with the lateral piers being founded on a medium soil and the central pier and the abutments on a firm soil;$Paragraph$$Paragraph$Three different levels of both loss of coherence and wave-passage are investigated, corresponding to the following values of vs and vapp : 300 m=s, 900 m=s and infinity; the case in which both are infinity corresponds to synchronous motion.$Paragraph$The effects of the spatial variability of the ground motion on the response of bridge structures are investigated in this study. A parametric study is carried out on a representative set of bridges subjected to carefully selected combinations of the factors inducing spatial variability.$Paragraph$The PGA, for the nature of the phenomenon under examination, varies along the bridges length; the reference PGA has been arbitrarily assumed as that of the left abutment.
